Dr. Filippo Incontro (1994) is a PhD student in Religious Studies within the SNSF Project "Ageing and Old Age in the 4th–6th Century Roman Empire: Religious, Legal, Social, and Physical Dimensions" (RomAge). He holds an MA in Law and a PhD in Roman Law from the University of Trento (Italy). His doctoral research examined the relationship between land and law between the second and first centuries BC, with particular reference to Roman territories in ancient North Africa and to the original provincia Africa.
His current research focuses on the transformations that the establishment of Christianity brought about, between the fourth and sixth centuries, in the perception and legal treatment of old age and later life, drawing on legislative sources — in both Latin and Greek — as well as documentary evidence such as papyri and inscriptions, with particular attention to changes in family and inheritance law, as well as to the mechanisms of exemption and assistance that developed in this period as a possible reflection of an evolving Christian sensibility.
